Dronten is a town and commune in the Dutch province of Flevoland, in the eastern part of Flevoland. The plans of the Dronten commune were drawn up from the beginning of the 1950s. The first concrete plans began in 1958, construction began in 1960, and on April 26, 1962 the first residents settled there. The commune of Dronten was established by law on January 1, 1972. Dronten takes its name from the Dronthen Polder, a polder established in silt near Kampen, on the border between the provinces of Overijssel and Gelderland.
